North Carolina Education Lottery checking for debts owed to local governments

The new Education Lottery has been legislated to verify that winners of $600 or more do not have debts owed to local governments before awarding prize money.  The regional award sites can access debt information that has been submitted by the Debt Setoff Clearinghouse to the Department of Revenue.

The funds recovered are submitted by the Education Lottery to the Clearinghouse on the same schedule as the Department of Revenue, which is twice per month from February through December.  These funds are placed into the local governments account with Capital Management of the Carolinas and appear in the standard files and reports.

See the top right area of this page for the total amount setoff by the N.C. Education Lottery.
